Salaton Potot Laizer

Background

Salaton Potot Laizer was born and raised in a large Maasai family consisting of one father, four wives (his mother was the 4th wife), and 44 total children. Because his mother was the 4th wife, she did not receive much support. As his mother’s eldest child and son, Salaton has carried a significant responsibility for his family. Currently 30 years old, Salaton remains focused on overcoming life’s challenges and pursuing his personal dreams while supporting his mother and younger siblings that depend on him as the eldest son in the family.

Early Life and Educational Challenges

Growing up in the Maasai community, Salaton faced cultural expectations and family responsibilities from a young age. Traditionally, Maasai boys are expected to inherit cattle from their fathers, but Salaton’s circumstances were different as his father was not present in his life.  Instead, he became a trusted support for his mother and younger siblings.

Salaton’s formal education ended in third grade due to financial constraints.  Despite his mother’s efforts to keep him in school, the cost became overwhelming, and he made the difficult decision to leave school to help support his family.

Overcoming Hardship and Pursuing Livelihood

After leaving school, Salaton took on various manual labor jobs to provide for his family.  He worked as a cattle caretaker and farm laborer, earning money to buy food and essentials for his mother and siblings.  Between 2021 and 2023, he secured employment at a tourist tent camp as a central tractor operator as well as taking care of the tourist tents earning $100/month.  While this income covered basic needs, it did not allow for any significant personal or family advancement.

Support and Renewed Hope

In 2023, Salaton’s life took a positive turn when he met Debbie, who offered him substantial support after hearing about his struggles.  Debbie paid for his school fees and and is assisting his youngest sister with her education.  Salaton is deeply grateful for Debbie’s generosity and acknowledges the profound impact her help has had on his life.

Life Goals and Aspirations

Despite the progress he has made, Salaton continues to strive for personal and economic improvement. He also desires to help other in his community. His current goals include:

  • Supporting micro businesses in his village
  • Finding sponsors for children in his village to attend a local private school that teaches English and has much lower class sizes.
  • Securing a fresh water source for his family’s needs as well as his livestock
  • Building his employability as a safari guide by purchasing a safari jeep
  • Improving his English language skills: particularly during the low tourism season with the aim of enhancing employment prospects and communication abilities.

Conclusion

Salaton Potot Laizer’s journey is marked by resilience, determination, and a continuous pursuit of personal growth. Despite facing significant obstacles, he remains committed to improving his circumstances and supporting his family.  His story exemplifies the power of hope, hard work, and the impact that compassionate support can have on an individual’s life.
